Asthma Preceptorship for Clinicians
With support from the Hudson Valley Asthma Coalition, the Children’s Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley (CEHCHV) provides a 4-hour clinical preceptorship on asthma. Clinicians observe expert pediatric pulmonologists as they treat their patients. Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants throughout Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, and Westchester counties are eligible. Continuing medical education credits are available for physicians. There is no cost for the preceptorship or CME.
CEHCHV is a part of the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergy and Sleep Medicine at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center and New York Medical College.
Objectives of the Preceptorship
1. Accurately diagnose asthma in children
A. Ages 0 – 4 years
B. Ages 5 – 18 years
2. Manage asthma in children in accordance with the NHLBI Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma
A. Assessing severity and initial classification
B. Assessing control, concepts of risk and impairment
C. Use of medications and devices (spacers, nebulizers)
D. Asthma Action Plan, follow-up
E. When to refer to a specialist
3. Accurately utilize spirometry to diagnose and manage asthma
A. Practice aspects of office spirometry in primary care
B. Accurate administration and interpretation of spirometry in children
4. Educate caregivers on the role of environment in the management of asthma
A. How to conduct an environmental history
B. How to work with and educate parents on how to mitigate environmental effects on asthma
